What is a "Formative" Assessment?
A formative is an assessment "for" learning. A formative assessment is formal and informal processing that teachers and students use to gather evidence for the purpose of improving learning. These assessments guide the students to mastery and may take the form of an assignment, quiz, project, etc. Formative assessments tell both the student and the teacher where that student is in terms of full understanding and application of the materials. NOT ALL FORMATIVE ASSESSMENTS WILL BE GRADED.
What is a "Summative" Assessment?
A summative is an assessment "of" learning. It provides evidence that the student has mastered the content and skills. Summative assessments will usually follow multiple formative assessments where re-teaching may need to take place. These are the assessments that heavily “count” toward a student’s grade. Summative work must be completed on time and when assigned. With few exceptions, summative work is completed in the classroom.
